Samsung Galaxy S5 may launch in April with iris-scanning feature

Samsung Galaxy S5 is a much-anticipated device, and the speculation around it is endless. However, in a Bloomberg News interview published on Thursday, Samsung's mobile executive VP, Lee Young-hee, outlined broad plans for the company's upcoming flagship smartphone, the next iteration of the Galaxy Note phablet as well as the new Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

Speaking about the launch date of the Galaxy S5, and the next iteration of the Galaxy Gear, Young-hee was quoted as saying, "We've been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time. When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved."

The launch of the Galaxy Gear alongside the Galaxy S5 was rumoured as far back as November. However, the launch date seems to contradict what another Samsung executive is reported to have said recently. Samsung Electronics Vice President of Design Team Dong-hoon Chang had apparently said that talk of a Galaxy S5 launch around MWC 2014 was "about right", so could we see a February unveiling at MWC, followed by a launch in March-April? It's certainly possible.

Rumours of the eye-scanning feature, which we've reported before, were also acknowledged by Young-hee, who said: "Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology." Young-hee also said the company was considering the inclusion of iris-scanning technology in the Galaxy S5, to take on Apple's Touch ID fingerprint-scanning biometric authentication feature, launched with the iPhone 5s.

Interestingly, Young-hee in the interview acknowledged the slow adoption of the Galaxy S4, saying "it's partly true that consumers couldn't really feel much difference between the two products (Galaxy S IIIand Galaxy S4) from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn't as big." 

In this context, speaking about plans for the Galaxy S5, Young-hee added: "For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it's about the display and the feel of the cover."

Describing plans for the next iteration of the Samsung Galaxy Note phablet, Young-hee said a three-sided display was under consideration, one that would enable users to be able to read from a sharper angle. He added that the next Galaxy Note will be released, as always, in the second half of the year, and be targeted at consumers who want "more professional use and tend to be willing to pay more for handsets."
 
When elaborating about Samsung's plans for the future of the wearable device segment, Young-hee said that health-care related functions will be a very important part of next-generation wearables like the Galaxy Gear.   

Android 4.4 KitKat now on 1.4 percent of all Android devices: Google

Google has released the official statistics regarding the usage of the various versions of Android. Continuing the trend spotted in the previous month's report, those devices that are running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Android 4.4 KitKat are on the rise. Like the last report, most Android devices are running a version of Jelly Bean. Beginning April 2013, the distribution data charts are now based on the data collected from each device when the user visits the Google Play store. Google also stopped including Android 1.6 Donut and Android 2.1 Eclair in the data, as it is gathered from the new version of Google Play store app, which supports Android 2.2 and above.

Google announced Android 4.4 KitKat update late in November last year for their Nexus devices, but most other players, like Samsung, Sony and LG still have not released the Android 4.4 updates for their devices. Industry analysts say that the upgrades will start rolling in within the first quarter this year.

However now, according to monthly Android distribution numbers, KitKat has increased its share to 1.4 percent of all Android devices. This is a 0.3 percent increase from the previous month, where it was 1.1 percent.

Incidentally version 4.3 of the Android OS platforms, Jelly Bean, also continues to gain ground. It can stem from the fact that the new 4.4 upgrade has not yet come on most Android devices except the Nexus devices. The current share of the Android 4.1.x Jelly Bean-powered devices is 35.9 percent (interestingly, dropping from 37.4 percent the previous month). The two new versions of the Jelly Bean, 4.2 and 4.3 grew by 2.5 percent each bringing the grand total of Android 4.x.x to 59.1 percent. This is a growth of 4.6 percent compared to the previous month, where it was 54.5 percent.

Android 2.2 Froyo, 2.3 Gingerbread, and 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the other hand, are losing shares as predicted. All three versions dropped their cut in the overall distribution. Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich were the biggest losers with 2.9 percent and 1.7 percent drops respectively, which is actually more than they lost last month, hinging at updates intensifying. Curiously, Android 3.2 Honeycomb is still refusing to disappear form the map. The tablet-only Android version continues to sit on a 0.1 percent share - it has been there for a few months now.

It's worth pointing out that the total sample excludes forked variants of Android (the ones on Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets) and variants in China that don't include Google services.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to launch in mid-March at a London event: Report

There's no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S5 has become one of the most eagerly-anticipated smartphones of the year, as leaks related to the device just keep coming in.

A new rumour now claims that the South Korean handset maker will be holding a global event in London scheduled around mid-March. Further, the event is said to be for the unveiling of the company's next flagship smartphone, widely expected to be dubbed Galaxy S5. The news comes via a freelance journalist named Flavio, who claims to get the information from a reliable source. The tweetreads, "Samsung to hold its next Global launch (S5?) event in London in a mid March date, a reliable source confirmed me."

It's worth pointing out that, while speaking about the launch date of the alleged Galaxy S5 recently, Samsung's mobile executive VP, Lee Young-hee, hinted that the flagship smartphone (Galaxy S5) might be launched around March and April.

The Samsung VP further added that the company has been considering the inclusion of an iris-scanning feature on the Samsung Galaxy S5. In addition, the VP also revealed plans about company's successor to the Galaxy Gear. The eye-scanning/iris-recognition feature has not been introduced on any smartphone (from a major manufacturer) as an unlocking method, and if Samsung actually uses this, it would become the first handset maker to debut the feature on a smartphone.

It's worth mentioning that Samsung has been said to release two versions of the alleged Galaxy S5: a premium variant which will sport a metal chassis and a flexible OLED, and a variant which will come with the usual plastic body, as found on other Galaxy smartphones. An earlier report emerging from Korea had claimed that Samsung is adopting a blend of stainless steel (to increase the endurance) and plastic (to check the weight) to build the alleged 'premium' variant of the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Rumoured specifications of the alleged Galaxy S5 include a 64-bit Exynos chipset or a new Snapdragon chipset, 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel rear camera, a 4000mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz UI on top.
